Why they're called 'man's best friend' -
We can learn so many things from a dog's behaviour personality, demeanor, resiliency, and most importantly, the willingness to provide their family members with unconditional love, loyalty, and companionship down to their very last breath. Dogs can sense peoples emotions which makes them a good emotional support animal.
Coursework research - Brief 1.
Create a front cover and a double page spread article for an informative
educational magazine aimed at an audience of
10-13 year olds.
Planning -
Educational magazine on how to take care of dogs.
Dog facts -
- There are more than 150 dog breeds
- Your dog can smell your feelings.
- Dogs do not sweat by salivating. They sweat through the pads of their feet.
- Your one year-old pup is as physically mature as a 15-year-old human.
- How to train your dog -
- PROVIDE A PROTECTED AND CLEAN LIVING ENVIRONMENT FOR YOUR DOG. Shelter from the elements and hazards, as well as good hygiene, are basic to a quality life.
- ALWAYS KEEP FRESH WATER AVAILABLE. Maintaining optimal hydration is important for health and energy.
- FEED A QUALITY DIET AND PREVENT OBESITY. Overweight humans and animals can adversely affect health in many ways. Follow the dietary recommendations that your veterinarian will make according to the nutritional needs of your dog, based on size, age, level of activity and breed. Remember to provide healthy treats rather than table scraps, as rewards.
- HAVE YOUR PET EXAMINED BY A VETERINARIAN ON A REGULAR BASIS. Keep a copy of your pet’s vaccination records in your home or with you when you travel. Contact your veterinarian if you believe that your pet may be ill, injured, or if something just doesn’t seem right. Your veterinarian is the expert on keeping your dog healthy.
- PROVIDE AMPLE OPPORTUNITIES TO EXERCISE. Make sure your dog gets the regular exercise needed to enable it to be fit. By being in shape, your dog will be more capable of participating in the activities that it enjoys.
- COMMUNICATE WITH YOUR DOG AND DEVELOP A RELATIONSHIP. Dogs are social creatures and they need to interact with their owner. Quality time will help you get to know your dog and understand particular needs that it might have, as well enhance your ability to recognise early signs of an illness that could be developing. In addition, time spent in developing a relationship will help prevent many undesirable behavioural patterns.
- TRAIN YOUR DOG TO FOLLOW THE SIMPLE COMMANDS. Puppy and dog training classes can be very helpful. The better your dog is at following basic and necessary commands, the greater the chances are that your dog will live a safe and long life.
- PRACTICE REPRODUCTIVE CONTROL. If you do not intend to create puppies, spaying or neutering is a certain option. If you plan to breed your dog or are opposed to spaying and neutering for other reasons, take appropriate measures to prevent mismating. Consult with your veterinarian in regard to other options that are available.
- DENTAL CARE IS VERY IMPORTANT. Many breeds are prone to gum disease, which can have serious implications. Infection resulting from this condition leads to premature tooth loss, and can commonly cause infections in major organs, including the heart valves.
- DON’T OVERLOOK GROOMING AND NAIL TRIMMING. Long coated dogs are prone to developing matts and ice balls in their hair. Overgrown nails are common in elderly dogs and can make it more difficult for them to walk. In addition, such nails are much more prone to breaking, which can be quite painful

When dogs became pets -
Dogs most probably evolved from wolves at a single location about 20,000 to 40,000 years ago.
Scientists believe dogs started moving around the world, perhaps with their human companions, about 20,000 years ago. By 7,000 years ago, they were pretty much everywhere, although they were not the kind of dogs that we would consider pets. They would likely have resembled dogs we today call village dogs, which are free-breeding that did not live in specific people's houses and have a similar look to them across the world," said Dr Veeramah. The dogs were later bred for their skills as hunters, herders or gundogs, eventually creating hundreds of modern breeds.

Dogs are intelligent and willing to be trained, which means they make a great companion and work animal. Different dog breeds have different personalities and skills, but most dogs have large teeth, can run fast and jump, and have strong muscles. Dogs have very good senses, they can smell up to 40 times better than humans. However they can't see as many colours as us!
What dogs best for you?
If you are somebody who likes long walks and exercise you should get a dog like a german Shepard's or a beagle, as they are high energy friendly dogs. However German Shepard's are often bred as guard dogs so don't encourage bad behaviour.
However if you are more relaxed you would be better suited to a Boston terrier or a Pug, as they require less exercise. However when looking for dogs like this it is always sensible to look out for any issues! As overbreeding can cause problems for your dog. Make sure you're buying from a proper store!
If you're more of a family person and want a new puppy calmer dogs like a greyhound or a basset hound. Be careful with your greyhound however as they are often used for greyhound racing, often resulted in a very injured dog. Basset hounds are very prone to major health conditions, so be careful and make sure they're getting their regular checkups.

The purpose of my product is to teach younger kids how to effectively raise and train their dogs. Making them aware of dangers to the dog and what they should avoid. They will be informed of everything that the dogs will need to help them grow strongly. It'll contain fun facts to make it more appealing to the 10-13 year olds and overall will just be a fun magazine for them to read and learn from.
The product will be designed with fun bright colours to make it appealing for the age range. There will be lots of pictures of different breeds of dogs throughout the magazine pages with information of each dog to go along with it.

They layout for the magazine is very simple. Most of it is taken up by the animal bang in the centre while all the information has been put off to the sides. It sticks to the same colour pallet of yellows, oranges and reds with a bit of green too. These types of colours fit a theme for apes and represents a friendly and cheerful environment making it more appealing to kids.
The brand of magazine stands out quite a lot from others because of the bold colours and big images. Most animal magazines have more of a tonne down colour pallet compared to this. The bold font at the top in bubble writing is appealing to kids because its very clean and childish. They've also put it in a blue to make it stand out from the rest of the magazine to make sure people know who its by.
The product values are quite high, they have a glossy cover and well thought out. It is very detailed, and a lot go effort has obviously gone into producing it. They haven't only talked about animals in this, but also about things these kids might find helpful while growing up and lots of DIY.
This magazines teaches kids facts about animals they may not have known, making them more aware of nature and the wildlife around them. The magazines makes the facts fun to read by adding lots of pictures and making them short.
All of this appeals to an audience for 10-13 because although it has quite a childish sort of theme to it, it also is able too teach kids about serious things they're gonna need to know about in life yet they've still made it interesting and fun for them.
Although they've made this a magazine about apes they've also added in facts for other animals to have bit more variety to the magazine and to keep the audience interested instead of getting bored reading about the same things. This is really effective because people of this age range are going to lose focus quite easily.

Important commands to train your dog:
- Sit
- Lay down
- Stay
- Leave it
Sit -
- Hold a treat close to your dog’s nose.
- Move your hand up, allowing their head to follow the treat and causing their bottom to lower.
- Once he’s in sitting position, say “Sit,” and give them a treat to show they're doing right.
Lay down -
- First hold your hand up to your dog’s snout. When they sniff it, move your hand to the floor, so they follow you.
- Then slide your hand along the ground in front of them to encourage their body to follow their head.
- Once he’s in the down position, say “Down,” and give them a treat to show they're doing right.
Stay -
- First, ask your dog to “Sit.”
- Then open the palm of your hand in front of you, and say “Stay.”
- Next take a few steps back. Reward them with a treat and affection if they stay.
- Gradually increase the number of steps you take before giving your dog the treat.
- Remember to always reward your pup for staying put — even if it’s just for a few seconds.
Leave it -
- Place a treat in both hands.
- Next, show your dog one enclosed fist with the treat inside, and say, “Leave it.”
- Make sure to let them lick, sniff, mouth, paw, and bark to try to get it — and ignore these behaviours.
- Once they stop trying, give them the treat from the other hand.
- Repeat until your dog moves away from that first fist when you say, “Leave it.”
- Finally, only give your dog the treat when he moves away from that first fist.

Shots -
The type of shots I want are going to be long shots, the dog facing directly at the camera. I would preferably like them jumping or either sitting down. Some of the shots for the double page spread I want to be quite playful, making it more lively for the kids. These will be a range of different shots ranging from close ups to long shots at nearly all angels. I would preferably like different dogs in my magazine, but it might be a bit of trouble getting them. I would only need a range of 2-3, however if I can not find this I will illustrate some instead. I want the background to be outside, in a field or the woods to make it feel a bit more adventurous, because a plain background will be too boring for a kids magazine with the topic I'm doing.
