Explain two reasons why a film company would release a video game linked to a film.
Releasing a video game linked to a film is a good way of getting publicity for both of said things. If people like the movie they will most likely buy the game, if they see the game they might decide to go see the movie. It is a very good way of getting publicity.
It'll also just get them more money. Making a game as well as a movie is very expensive so they have to make the money back. The movie was selling for about £7.99, and the cinema tickets were about £5.90 for a child and £7.90 for an adult. This would gain a lot of money for the company.
Explain at least two uses and gratifications of video games using Blumer and Katz's theory. Refer to The Lego Movie Video Game to support your answer.
The Lego Movie uses 'uses and gratifications' of video games by uses it as a distraction from everything around you. People play video games so they don't have to deal with real world problems. Like in The Lego Movie video game, you take yourself to a different world and get to live a better, more interesting life.
Relationships is also a good example. Video games help us connect with our friends when we don't want to go outside. It is something to discuss with everyone around who also likes it. It is a good way to form friendships and to bond more.
Some video games also help us consider who we are, and who we are like inside the game. Say you were playing The Lego Movie video game - a lot go people would like to link themselves to the hero, it could possibly make them feel more confident with them self, if they believe they are the hero. I personally think this is a really good example of uses and gratifications because its all to hook us in.
The Lego Movie uses the same information as the game. They use the same characters - such as Wyldstyle and Emmet. They also use the same settings so the game is familiar to the kids playing, this way they might enjoy it more. The colour palette is also intriguing to the kids because of all the bright colours, such as the yellows, greens and blues throughout the game.
Analyse how genre codes have been used in The Lego Movie poster campaign to appeal to a family audience.
Action poster genre codes have been used in The Lego Movie poster campaign by using the five things that are the posters appealing - The five common convections; typography, title, credits, image, the logo.
They for one use the right sort of imagery. By picking a good pose for the characters to be in. Such as the ensemble cast running from danger. This is able to appeal to a family audience although its showing them in danger, it's able to draw in the target audience by showing them might what happen, this makes the audience feel the need to watch the film to see what happens. Each poster also have different stereotypes for the people in the audience. Such as Wyldstyle. She doesn't fit into the stereotypical 'hollywood girl'. She has dark black hair with bright coloured stripes. Because this doesn't fit into the stereotypes a lot more women are able to relate to it, which makes it more interesting for them. Emmet also looks like an average, boring working guy who turns out to be a hero, this is appealing to med because its what they aspire to be like.
Another is the image and colour palettes they use. They use quite bright colours to catch the attention of the kids looking at them. They use; reds, oranges, blues, greens, yellows and all. This is good to get the attention of families because as I've said the bright colour attracts the kids. This appeals to a family audience because it makes it seem very bright, fun and friendly.
The typography is also really important, the title is what sticks out the moisten the poster so it has to be unique. As you can see on all of the posters the title sticks out quite prominently. The 3D effect on the title is very appealing, and the fact that the colours are quite dull compared to the rest makes it stick out quite a bit too. I don't really believe this has a big appeal on the family audience, as compared to the characters the title isn't very important. Although because the title is the same as the actual logo for lego, it will intrigue the kids if they play with it.
